The National Institute for Agricultural Economics (Istituto Nazionale di Economia Agraria – INEA, www.inea.it), funded in 1928, is a public research institute under the Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry Policies. INEA has a network of 20 regional offices, with research and administrative staff in each Italian Region. INEA is the leading organisation in Italy for research on business economics and socio-economics in agriculture. INEA field of study covers not only agriculture and agricultural economics but also economic policy, environment, territorial issues and management systems, trade, finance and information technology.
INEA carries out research on behalf of several organisations, including the European Commission, the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies (MIPAAF), the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Treasury, Budget and Economic Planning, the Ministry of Environment, the Department of Tourism of the Ministry of Industry and several Regional and Local Authorities and Producers’ Organisations. INEA is involved in a very large network of Research Institutes and Universities across Europe. The institutional role of INEA has also facilitated important collaboration with the main international institutions involved in activities related to agricultural policies and markets, such as OECD and FAO.
The main activities of INEA, which involve research, evaluation and technical assistence may be summarized in the following main areas of interests:
- Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN), the main European instrument for evaluating the income of agricultural holdings and the impacts of the Common Agricultural which INEA represents the official link between Italy and EU.
- Rural Development policies, providing assistance to Regional Governements and central Administrations on the implementation of rural development measures, together with the development of guidelines and application procedures about rural development’s EC Regulations.
- Agriculture and environment, supporting the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Environment on the drafting and the implementation of agro-environmental policies for the protection and the management of natural resources including land, water, bio-energies, forestry, desertification and Climate Change, particularly analysing the impacts of GHG mitigation and adaptation policies on the agricultural sector.
- ICT and Territorial Information Systems, for the application of spatial data technologies as GIS, Decision Support Systems and remote sensing to the monitoring of territorial and environmental issues as well as for agricultural statistics.
